WAILEA, Hawai‘i December 2, 2014 - Josh Jerman of Hawaii Life Real Estate Brokers is once again offering the Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship to encourage college-bound students to use their education to benefit Maui County.

Now in its eleventh consecutive year, the scholarship program provides academic scholarships to college-bound students who will attend a full-time program at an accredited four-year college or university. To date, the program has awarded more than $35,000 in scholarships to Maui, Moloka‘i and Lana‘i high school seniors who have displayed a passion for returning to Maui County after college to contribute to the local economy.

Josh Jerman has been an award-winning, top-producing real estate broker on Maui since 2004. He is the founder of the Josh Jerman Foundation, the Josh Jerman Maui Nui Scholarship and a benefactor of many local charities and nonprofit organizations. “I’m continuously impressed by the caliber of applicants each year—and even more impressed by those recipients who have now fulfilled the objective of the scholarship program, which is to return to Maui County as a productive member of the community,” said Jerman. “If I could give a word of advice to students: what sets a successful applicant apart from the rest is the depth and breadth of their personal essay responses.”

Last year, Jerman awarded three Maui County high school graduates scholarships of $1,000 each. The recipients were Tyler Pascua of Lana‘i High School, Takayoshi Tsutsui of Seabury Hall and Nash Wuthrich of Baldwin High School.

This year, the scholarship program will award three high school seniors $1,000 each based on their plans to contribute to Maui County's workforce after graduation.

To apply, students must be a resident of Maui County, be enrolled in a full-time program at an accredited four-year college or university (for the 2015-16 academic year) and demonstrate financial need. The application deadline is Friday, Feb. 20, 2015. Recipients of the award will be notified on or before March 30, 2015. Students can download application materials at www.joshjermanfoundation.org. Executive Director Paul Tonnessen was honored at the Hui No'eau Visual Arts Center receiving the "Executive Director Of The Year" award for Maui County.  Although he is honored to receive this award he also recognizes that without the support of an amazing Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers he would be unable to achieve the success that the Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui has accomplished.

"I share this honor not only with my Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers but also with the entire Maui Community who help us year after year to make a difference in the life of a child of abuse and or neglect in Maui County." Tonnessen stated.

The Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui (FCJC) is a private, non-profit corporation, founded in 1989 by a non-partisan group of community and business leaders concerned with the social welfare of children and families who have been traumatized by abuse and severe neglect.

Maui County High School and Public Libraries Receive Donated Books

MAKAWAO – Haleakala Ranch wrapped up its 125th Anniversary commemoration last week by donating its history book to all private and public high schools and public libraries within Maui County.   The book, entitledHaleakala Ranch, has been in the works for nine years and was published earlier this year.

Author John Harrisson joined Haleakala Ranch Corporate Secretary Karyn Arakawa to present the books to Glenda Berry, Makawao Branch Manager for the Hawaii State Public Library System. The books will be distributed to public libraries in Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, Makawao, Hana, Lahaina, Lanai and Molokai in addition to the Hawaii Business Research Library in Kihei. At the same time, donated books were mailed to all private and public high school libraries on Maui.

“We hope that our donation helps to enhance the library’s already outstanding collection of Hawaii books,” said Haleakala Ranch president Don Young. “The history of Haleakala Ranch is such an integral part of Maui’s history, we wanted to make it available to everyone.”

According to librarian Glenda Berry, books about the history of Upcountry Maui are rare. “This is a major addition to our history of Hawaii section. It is especially prized because of the oral histories it contains. I have read it and it is so well done. The photos are integrated with the text and it really bring the history alive,” she said.

The friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui announced the launch of their new mandated reporting filmed entitled Innocence.  The film was created in response to recent changes in the State of Hawaii's  chapter 350 law surrounding mandated reporting laws for child abuse and or neglect.

Paul Tonnessen, Executive Director of  the Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui expects the film to make a big impact in the education and understanding of mandated reporting,  "This film will enable our agency to distribute much needed information statewide to all the human service agencies, schools, courts and other individuals who work directly with children."

The new mandated reporting film will not only be made available to individuals whom work directly with children, but also the general public.  The goal of the film is to emphasize  the importance of reporting any suspicions of child abuse and or neglect. The short 12 minute film can also be viewed on the Friends of the Children's Justice Center of Maui's website at www.mauicjc.org.  The film was written and produced in partnership with Wade Robson Creations, a film production company based on Maui and by volunteers from the Maui community.
